Sardine continues La Gallina Matta’s summer tablescape project, which began with the Lobster design at the heart of Lobster Print. Its circling fish, vivid contrasts and precise embroidered borders carry that graphic language forward in a lighter, more playful interpretation.
The evolution of a motif
A circle of sardines in motion
The idea came from a ceiling painting in which a constellation of stars appeared to chase one another in a circle. That movement inspired a ring of sardines swimming in pursuit, though the first version of the motif proved too dense.By reducing the number of fish and simplifying their lines, the design found a clearer, lighter rhythm. It follows the curve of the Round placemat, contrasts with the geometry of Doppio Quadro and reappears on the cocktail napkins, where a sardine seems to rise from the edge of the linen.
A choice of expression
Color sets the rhythm
Colour is integral to the Sardine motif. Each fishbone is embroidered in a contrasting shade, chosen to connect with the double border of the Doppio Quadro placemat or the embroidered edge of the Round design. The combinations draw on familiar colours from the collection, reworked into a bright summer palette. For a quieter interpretation, the rectangular Doppio Quadro placemat is also offered in a tonal version, where motif, border and linen remain within the same colour family. A more minimal expression of the design, without losing its movement or character.
